based on the mitt romney that showed up last night. we've got two more debates left. now we know what we're dealing with. we know that mitt romney will, in a split second, waulk away from the central policy of his entire economic plan because he knows it's bad politics. he has been campaigning on this $5 trillion tax cut since the beginning of the primaries. and last night he tried to walk away from it, because he knows he's going to have to tell the middle class that he's going to have to raise their taxes if he wants to pay for it. >> the $5 trillion cut, the president talked about that today. that was sort of the heart when you talk about him being honest, it comes down to the tax cuts. >> with well, there's plenty of other examples. >> let me play this one and get your reaction. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night sai

out on it. here's the deal. romney's not going to try to bring it up in the debate. nor will president obama because the moment you do, you have opened the door for your opponent to actually you out. so, responsibility's going to rest on the debate moderator, who is not going to do it, but again, what people are saying is can i get somebody to tell me the truth? you can cross words all you want to, but there are some things called undeniable truth. so no matter how you want to dance around it, some things are very clear. >> there's also such a thing as throwi throwing things against the wall and that is what the obama campaign has been effective at doing and the romney campaign hasn't been. >> the romney campaign, they have been -- i can show you the proof. go to our website. again, you have campaigns -- >> check up on after the fact. >> my point, you said earlier -- i said absolutely. if you have that many eyeballs watching and this is -- >> we can go back and hear the the transcript. i said it's subjective and unclear and you can manipulate late the process. >> so some things, but th

mitt romney must do to win the presidential debate on wednesday. unfortunately, nobody knows what they are. do you know what they are? >> well, i think it's going to be talking to the american people about how the middle class has been buried under the higher taxes, the higher regulations and the -- just the job-killing policies for the past four years and how mitt romney can talk straight to the american people about how he has a plan to create jobs, specific things, like in my home state of virginia, he's going to allow us to have exploration off shore with energy so we can have good high-paying jobs. that's something supported by democrat senators like mark warner and jim webb in my home state of virginia and something this president has stopped. we're also going to get rid of those job-killing regulations that killed 1,200 jobs in the coal fields of virginia and west virginia and elsewhere. and we're also going to cut taxes on small businesses. cut taxes across the board of a -- across the board tax cut instead of the promise that barack obama is going to increase taxes across the

ring. romney took a break with his debate partner, senator rob portman, to get lunch at a chipotle in denver today. chipotle is pretty good. while obama stepped out of debate camp in nevada to visit the hoover dam. that's neat too. with as many as 60 million americans expected to watch, both camps keep expectations low. it's a big game to say i'm going to do worse than you. romney senior adviser barbara come stock is in denver and jen socky, press secretary for the obama campaign is in las vegas with the president. good to see both of you. nice big smiles. i love this optimism. we're all excited about tomorrow. barbara, let me start with you. there was something politico's chief political columnist wrote today that sort of made me smile and i wanted to get your reaction. roger same mondays wrote, there are three things mitt romney must do to win the presidential debate on wednesday. unfortunately, nobody knows what they are. do you know what they are? >> well, i think it's going to be talking to the american people about how the middle class has been buried under the higher taxes, the

have when it comes to a debate. when you hear lies on a debate, they should be called on out on the spot. when you hear a lie, it shouldn't be, hmm. it should be i'm sorry, mr. romney or president obama, that's not true because with so many people watching, people want to know i'm hearing the truth. it shouldn't be let me wait two hours later to get the truth. call them out on the lies whoever says it, on the spot. >> sometimes, that takes a tough level of preparation. although you should be able to -- >> that's why you have a team to decide and that's their job. >> we live in a world -- >> it's not just about preparation. >> lies are subjective. i can't believe i'm saying that -- >> president obama -- promised he would not raise middle class taxes. in his affordable care act, there are a number of tax increases that will impact households making less than $250,000 per year. you can parse that and say, it's note a tax increase the way i talked, that's something else. the thing is, one thing or another, is it a tax increase or not? it certainly is through the tax system. it is impact

than simply the economy. and i'm just saying that in these debates nec week, if the issue of life coming up, if the issue of marriage comes up, my advice to romney is not to go wobbly, but to state clearly what he believes and i think he can energize evangelical voters. >> aren't they already living in states mitt romney is going to win? doesn't he need to go for people who may think what you're saying about abortion is not what represents their point of view and say i don't want to vote for a guy that's going to say that? >> erin, remember this. in 2008, 20 million voters sat home and didn't vote. the fact is, he has to have evangelical voters. i said early on he could win without us and he did, but he can't win the general election without us. i think it's very important to do that. i think coming out strongly for life and for traditional marriage, it will suppress minority evangelicals, many are in my church. latinos and african-americans who voted for obama the last time, but they can't swallow his position on gay marriage. they're not going to go out and become republicans an

, paul ryan and mitt romney taking the stage since last night's debate. that, for most accounts, was a big win for their campaign. was it enough to change the dynamic of the race 33 days before the election? let's go to jim acosta at the rally in fishersville, virginia. trace adkins, i guess, is going to perform there. they're getting ready for a big, big blowout. >> reporter: that's right, erin. they are blowing this day up. you could say this is a #winningday for the romney campaign. trace adkins is on stage. and we saw the evidence of this all day long from the gop nominee, when he got on board his campaign plane earlier this morning. he was already cruising at a higher altitude, erin, chatting up his campaign staff. there was a smile on his face. and, honestly, erin, i've been covering this campaign for a year and a half. this was one of the happiest days that i've seen on the part of this campaign and its staff for some time. but you could tell that things were starting to change during the day, as the president was starting to mount that new offensive, going after mitt romney on
